Coastal escapes October 2018

Beautiful stays in Mousehole, St Ives and Newquay.

St Clement’s House, Mousehole

A skip away from iconic Mousehole harbour is elegant St Clement’s House, a delightful grade II listed Georgian home, which sleeps up to six guests in relaxing comfort. You’ll be charmed by this townhouse-come-cottage with its cobbled courtyard. The living room boasts comfy sofas, a large traditional wood-burner and tasteful artworks and objet d’art. On a lower level the kitchen is very well equipped with a large electric range, laid-back family dining table and plenty of culinary kit, so you can cook up a storm with fresh fish from nearby Newlyn. There are three bedrooms (one king-sized, one double and a twin) each decorated to cleverly combine traditional comfort with contemporary flair.

Beyond your courtyard a ‘secret passageway’ is waiting to be discovered, taking curious adventurers through a short winding alleyway that pops out right on the quayside, just above the little harbour beach that makes Mousehole so special and picture-perfect, with its great pubs, fine bistros and art galleries. The pristine beaches and ancient rugged moorlands of the Penwith peninsula are just a short drive away, making St Clement’s House the perfect base for adventurous families, and a romantic bolthole for couples too.

Artisan Cottage, St Ives

This small yet perfectly formed property is an original fisherman’s cottage, set above a small craft pottery and arranged on two levels. It’s moments from the Tate Gallery and stunning Porthmeor beach, and only a short stroll from the harbour.

This charming cottage has been carefully refurbished, and we simply love how the owners have brought out the character and delightful sense of homely coastal charm. All of the comforts you’d expect are sensitively integrated into the cottage, alongside the personal touches that really bring the St Ives experience to life, such as delightful handmade soft furnishings, collections of paintings and prints, as well as well-chosen books. It makes for the perfect St Ives retreat – big enough for a family, but cosy enough for a couple.

Whether you choose to make St Ives your base for exploring the beautiful coastline and the Penwith peninsula, or you simply want to settle in and soak up this iconic harbour town with its galleries, beaches and restaurants, Artisan Cottage makes a great choice.

The Gem at Pentire, Newquay

Part of The Pavilions – a small and exclusive development on the sought-after and secluded Pentire headland, The Gem combines seaside chic with contemporary design. Attention to detail oozes from every aspect of the design and facilities, with sophisticated greys and blues combining with carefully chosen fabrics, wall coverings and artworks. The beautiful kitchen has clean lines and a luxurious feel, and of course the bedroom boasts a king-sized bed.

The Gem also has its own patio and lawned terrace, and commands sea views across the River Gannel as well as full access to the shared private grounds of The Pavilions with outdoor seating and an après-beach shower – ideal for rinsing off sandy toes! Descend the steps at the bottom of the garden and you’ll find private access to the beautiful river estuary, and at low tide, you can stroll and paddle across pure sands to the award-winning Crantock beach.

Staying at The Gem, you’re quietly secluded, but only minutes away from the fine dining, stylish bars and innovative cafés that have made Newquay such a popular seaside resort.
