Discover Newlyn

We explore the authentic features that make Newlyn such a beautiful place to visit.

The pretty fishing harbour of Newlyn is a treasure trove of culture; heritage and eateries, with terraced cottages set along narrow streets and cobbled passageways that tumble down to the busy harbourside. Newlyn is particularly well known for two very different occupations – art and fishing. Its busy fish market puts it at the heart of Cornwall’s fishing industry, and it’s home to the largest fleet in the south of England. Alongside this you can easily see the influences of the creative arts. The Newlyn School Artists’ colony, associated with Walter Langley, Stanhope Forbes and Lamorna Birch is based here and there is still a thriving art scene in the community today.

Those in the know will already have discovered Newlyn Filmhouse – a small, independent cinema that offers a real appreciation for cinema enthusiasts, with on screen art exhibitions as well as new release movies and an exceptional café. For the arts, Newlyn Art Gallery is the obvious starting point but you aren’t far from Penlee House, or all that Penzance’s Chapel Street has to offer.

For foodies, be sure to head to Ben Tunnicliffe’s Tolcarne Inn, awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand for great food at affordable prices. There are also plenty of other eateries including seafood café Mackerel Sky, Newlyn Cheese and Charcuterie and you can even buy your own fish just yards away from the boat that landed it and cook up a storm yourself.

Forever Cornwall has two beautiful properties in Newlyn, both providing a great base from which to explore the area, one inspired by fishing, the other by art. Kiln Cottage is a dog friendly, quintessentially Cornish fisherman’s cottage in the heart of the village. Sleeping four, it has a private courtyard garden, beamed ceilings and utterly authentic décor – think woodburner and classic range cooker. Artist’s Retreat on the other hand was originally an artist’s residence and sits on an elevated pitch overlooking St. Michael’s Mount, sleeping six with a sub-tropical garden and an artist’s studio that you’re free to use. So this year, why not discover the beautiful seaside village of Newlyn, its rich heritage and surrounding attractions from your own unique retreat with Forever Cornwall?
