Helping Cornwall back to work
After problem solving throughout the lockdown, we discuss the challenges of the recent pandemic with Falmouth-based company, Passmore Cleaning.
Having just re-branded and launched a new website, Passmore Cleaning was gearing up for a busy spring season. That is, until the lockdown was announced. “They say timing is everything,” says business owner, Sharon Passmore. “Our newly refurbished offices were only open for one day when, overnight, our calendar went from fully booked to just a handful of key workers! It was a shock for the business and our staff, but we quickly recuperated. Most of our amazing team went on furlough, focusing instead on completing a range of online health and safety training courses.”
The current pandemic has, as you might expect, put pressure on the company, particularly as cleaning itself is put under the microscope around the world. “In many ways cleaners are on the front line,” explains Manager, Kate, “preventing the spread of the virus in workplaces and properties, all the while putting themselves at risk. But someone has to do it! Everyone is aware of the severity of the current pandemic, and the implications of catching the virus, which is why our staff are inundated with new method statements, adjusted cleaning schedules and PPE. Fortunately, the team knew that cleaning would play an important role in getting people back to work, so we aligned all our ducks early on.”
As the lockdown rules relaxed, Passmore Cleaning discovered an unexpected demand from the students of Falmouth – a packing and cleaning service. Those who abandoned their rented rooms to isolate with their families, or flew back home, were reaching the end of their tenancies, and so needed a service that packed up their belongings for storage and cleaned their room, ready for inspection. Demand has also risen sharply for deep cleaning. “The world is a little strange at the moment,” continues Sharon, “and our whole team has adapted well, taking each day as it comes.” They’ve even been helping some vulnerable people during the pandemic because, as Sharon says: “Even doing someone’s shopping goes a long way!”
Ultimately, all industries rely on cleaning to meet basic health and safety standards – now more than ever. And as businesses tentatively begin to re-open around the Duchy, Passmore Cleaning’s new website is getting more and more hits by the day. The calendar is once again filling up with all manner of cleaning jobs, so, for Passmore Cleaning at least, the future is looking bright.
