We speak to Ilona Ziarko, who tells us all about her Cornish housekeeping business, Spotless Cleaning.

On what inspired Ilona to take the leap and start her own business, she explains how it was driven strictly by potluck. Studying Journalism and PR at Falmouth University, having moved here from Poland, “I had no intention to stay. My tutors convinced me to stay another year to obtain a full English degree; I wasn’t sure about this decision, as my daughter, Alex, was only nine years old at that time and waiting for me at home in Poland with my parents.” But, when Ilona called her to broach the subject, Alex told her mother: “Mum, I would love to go there. Harry Potter and Hermione live in England.” So that was that!

A few years later, when things weren’t quite panning out as Ilona had expected, she decided it was time for a change. “I remember that I read this sentence somewhere: ‘If you want to achieve something that you have not achieved before, you must be prepared to do things that you have not done before.’”

Spotless Cleaning Cornwall currently has a core team of five, with a further 12 working as subcontractors. Ilona aims to grow but, as she puts it, “I am taking baby steps here as I do not want to promise things too quickly.”
