Oltco Cornwall plays its part in recycling the equivalent of over 120 million plastic straws!

Oltco Cornwall, the leading sustainable resin bound driveway company, led by local businessmen Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce, has recently played its part in recycling the equivalent of over 122 million plastic straws in driveways up and down the country. 

Using its innovative and award-winning Recycle Bound solution, Oltco Cornwall has been committed to tackling the issue of plastic waste and has played an integral role in the success story of Recycle Bound, which is being used not only for domestic projects, but also at some of the UK’s leading hotels and attractions. Although it is mainly used on driveways, paths and patios for the domestic market, it has in fact been used on larger commercial projects that include Trevornick Holiday Park, Bodmin Jail, Carbis Bay Hotel (the location of this year’s G7 Summit) and even the Eden Project. In fact, Oltco has recycled the equivalent of 882,000 plastic straws in and around the biomes of Eden!

With Oltco’s HQ based in Newquay, Directors Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce have always been aware of the damaging impact waste plastic has on the environment. In 2019, this led the duo to develop Recycle Bound – a unique and world-first solution to help tackle the issue of plastic waste.

Made utilising waste plastic (including straws, plastic drink bottles and food packaging) from a plastic recycling point, the waste is sorted and then crushed into a more manageable size, before being granulated and mixed with Oltco’s resin blend to create the innovative end-product. Each square-metre of Recycle Bound consists of the equivalent of 3,000 plastic straws; to put this into perspective, if Recycle Bound was laid on a standard 50-metre drive, the equivalent of 150,000 plastic straws would be recycled in the process!

Since its launch – and perhaps unsurprisingly – Recycle Bound has enjoyed resounding success, winning awards that include ‘Product of the Year’ at the Cornwall Business Awards, and runner up for ‘Recycled Product of the Year’ at the National Recycling Awards.
