Target smashed!

Charity appeal smashes target, saving Cornwall Hospice Care beds.

An appeal aimed at saving beds in Cornwall’s two adult hospices has raised well over its target a month before the deadline. Cornwall Hospice Care had hoped to bring in a quarter of a million pounds to protect beds at Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices. Now, the healthcare charity has revealed Terry’s Bed Appeal has raised a massive £283,600.

Oli Hoare is the Head of Fundraising: “We’ve been completely overwhelmed by the generosity of people across Cornwall. The reaction to the story of Terry, a patient who was in our care last summer, has been extraordinary. He wrote a letter before he sadly died asking people for help to keep his bed open for future patients and it struck a chord. The truth is that supporters have helped provide stability for us in a time of turmoil when the need for our hospices has been as important as ever and we can’t say a big enough thank you.”

Both Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia’s in Hayle have remained open 24/7 throughout the pandemic, admitting and caring for patients who need specialist palliative and end of life care. In the period from 1st April 2020 to 12th February 2021 Cornwall Hospice Care admitted 344 patients. Oli continues: “You helped us weather this challenging storm at a time when our shops have been closed and our fundraising activities curtailed. It’s my privilege to pass on a huge thank you from our whole team of nurses, doctors, chefs, housekeepers, maintenance, fundraisers, shop staff and our volunteers. We’re truly humbled by your support.”

David Renwick is the volunteer Chair of Trustees at Cornwall Hospice Care: “We can’t operate without the support of the Cornish community,” he tells us, “and this extraordinary appeal total proves the kindness and generosity of those we look to when it comes to funding the care our charity provides. With my thanks comes a request to continue supporting us by running your own fundraising activity, taking part in one of our events, playing our lottery or visiting our shops when they reopen.”
