Winter on the hill
Festive breaks, a getaway rate and three evenings worth dressing up for at The Alverton in Truro.
Step through the old oak door at The Alverton in winter and a fire is already roaring. Frost silvers the private gardens, the Christmas trees are lit and Truro’s cobbled streets, cathedral and late-night shopping lie a short walk away.
The Alverton’s magical Christmas break is a grand festive gesture. From 23rd December, guests are welcomed with a cocktail voucher, a mince pie and a mini-Cornish cream tea in The Oak. Christmas Eve brings a wine and cheese pairing and hot chocolate for anyone back from Midnight Mass. Christmas Day starts with a Buck’s fizz breakfast and ends with a film and popcorn, the turkey, the potatoes and the flaming pudding all taken care of in between. Boxing Day closes with a gala dinner in the Great Hall, cheese station and chocolate fountain included. Three nights start from £1,473 per room, based on two sharing.
For something gentler, the Cornish Getaway starts from £109 a night for two in November, with December from £119 and October from £159. The rate includes breakfast and a voucher for two classic cocktails or a Cornish cream tea, or add dinner for £35 per person.
The Alverton is hosting three evenings worth diarising before Christmas. On Friday 23rd October, The Casting Party takes the Great Hall back to 1950s Hollywood, where a film director is about to reveal the cast of his latest remake and tensions are simmering over dinner (£65). On Friday 6th November, the Oak Suite hosts a wine and cheese tasting from 7pm, with Cornish cheese producer Ben Stanfield and supplier James Greet sharing their stories (£35). On Wednesday 23rd December, The Million Pound Murder moves the action to the 1970s, with a fallen screen idol, a tell-all novel and a guest list full of people with something to hide (£65).
Whichever you choose, find your festive at The Alverton this season.
